The Trees of the Wood

At least once a week, Dalyn and I like to put on our boots, find a couple of good walking sticks, and go hiking back in the woods behind the house. This is our quality time – where we get to talk about stuff and where he likes to show me some of the coolest things, like rocks, and bugs, and more sticks better than the previous stick he just found. These are moments that I will cherish forever.

On our last hiking trip, while we were doing our usual “exploring,” I happened to notice something I had never really paid much attention to before. As I was standing at the base of a large tree, I looked up and noticed the swaying motion of the treetops overhead and heard the rustling chatter of the limbs and the leaves. It was nothing particularly extraordinary, but for a moment, it looked and sounded like the trees were worshipping God. And when I began to think about that, I was amazed and inspired.

Later on, as I was reading my Bible, I came across a passage in Psalms 96 that talks about how "the trees of the wood rejoice before the Lord." So I guess they were worshipping!! What I love about trees so much is that they tell such powerful stories. Some are old, some young, some blown sideways, some unique, some short, some very large. No matter what their story, no matter what the adversity they endured in their lifetime, somehow that tree finds a way to face upward toward the heavens and give glory to the God that created it.

A Great Philosophy on Life

I normally would not subject this blog to an email chain letter, however, this following quiz is powerful. You may have seen it in your inbox at some point in time. It's been going around since 2000 and has erroneously attributed Charles Schulz, the infamous Peanuts cartoonist, as the author. At any rate, as I said, it's powerful and worth the read....

Try to answer the following questions in your mind.

1. Name the five wealthiest people in the world.
2. Name the last five Heisman trophy winners.
3. Name the last five winners of the Miss America Contest.
4. Name ten people who have won the Nobel or Pulitzer Prize.
5. Name the last half dozen Academy Award winners for best actor and actress.
6. Name the last decade’s worth of World Series winners.

How did you do?

The point is, none of us remember the headliners of yesterday. These are no second-rate achievers. They are the best in their fields. But the applause dies. Awards tarnish. Achievements are forgotten. Accolades and certificates are buried with their owners.

Here’s another quiz. See how you do on this one:

1. List a few teachers who aided your journey through school.
2. Name three friends who have helped you through a difficult time.
3. Name five people who have taught you something worthwhile.
4. Think of a few people who have made you feel appreciated and special.
5. Think of five people you enjoy spending time with.

Easier?

The lesson: The people who make a difference in your life are not the ones with the most credentials, the most money, or the most awards. They are the ones that care.

READING: Finding the Silver

Proverbs 23:12 challenges, “Apply your heart unto instruction and your ears to the words of knowledge.” If you believe you can achieve great things or have hopes that your life will be a success, then it goes without saying, you must apply yourself to growing in knowledge. Many fantasize of lofty endeavors but fail because they do not put forth the effort to growing themselves. Remember, there are those who dream of success and then there are those who wake up and work hard at it.

If you're really not a reader, as I too once wasn't, you have to practice at it to become better at it. If you develop a habit of reading something every day, even something small, you will eventually start to enjoy it. Not only that, but your thinking will sharpen, your vocabulary will increase, and you will become a more interesting person all around. I urge you today to become a reader. Develop a daily habit. Work up an appetite for knowledge. It is by far one of the most rewarding investments you'll ever make.

Proverbs 24:3-4
Through wisdom is an house builded; and by understanding it is established: And by knowledge shall the chambers be filled with all precious and pleasant riches.

Proverbs 2:3-5
Yea, if thou criest after knowledge, and liftest up thy voice for understanding; If thou seekest her as silver, and searchest for her as for hid treasures; Then shalt thou understand the fear of the LORD, and find the knowledge of God.

To Read is to Discover

What is it that you want to know? What is it that you want to become? I bet you it’s in a book somewhere. Jim Rohn, the world renowned motivational speaker, once said, “Everything you need for better future and success has already been written. And guess what? All you have to do is go to the library.”

The Bible says it this way: “There is no new thing under the sun.” (Ecc. 1:9) It also says, that God has “given us ALL things pertaining to life and Godliness.” All things. So whatever the information may be, it’s already out there for the taking, you just have to go out and grab it.

Leaders are Readers

Want to be an effective leader? Get into the daily habit of reading. Effective leaders are avid readers.

In fact, I’ve often thought, “Find a good leader and you will find them reading a good book.” (Possibly many good books all at once.) Effective leaders possess an insatiable hunger for knowledge. They crave to learn and grow and gain a greater understanding of the things around them. They often want to know how, understand why, and they’re really good at taking what they absorb and translating it into their life, as well as, sharing with and impacting those around them from the abundance of what they’ve gleaned from others.

For a leader, reading is a tool, and a powerful one at that. Reading stimulates the mind and is a catalyst for thinking and for solving. It can crack open the windows of the brain to things and opportunities we never even knew existed before. Oftentimes, reading helps us to understand things fuller, see things clearer, and speak things better. And eventually it all pays off. In fact, there are powerful correlations among reading, vocabulary, and being successful. Studies have shown that people's earnings are in direct proportion to their vocabularies. Therefore, those who read more often have larger vocabularies, and those who have larger vocabularies tend to earn the most money.

You see, great things result from reading good books. To read is to empower. Yourself and then others. Are you this kind of a leader? Are you growing yourself every day? If you want to maximize your influence and be all that you are capable of being, become a voracious reader.

The Church Website

All I can say is, "Wow."

Trying to get the website back into ship-shape has proven to be very frustrating and utterly nerve racking. But it appears the worst is behind me now and the site will hopefully be back to normal function within the next few days. All in all, however, I've realized over the last couple weeks that there's far more worse things that could have happened.

So an Internet culprit, known as the Turkish Hacker, wreaked havoc on our website.......whatever, so what........Instead of grumbling, I'm thankful for so many things that are way more important.....God's love and peace above all else.......my wife, my son, my family, my dear friends, my wonderful church family......

Life is actually really, really good....and tomorrow is a new day.....
